Orthodontic specialists can improve smiles at any age, but there is usually an optimal age to begin treatment in order to achieve maximum improvement with the least expenditure of time and money.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children visit an orthodontist at age 7. This early examination enables the orthodontist to detect and evaluate problems and determine the appropriate time to treat them. After the initial evaluation, and Dr. Weiler may simply recommend periodic check-ups and delay orthodontic treatment until the permanent teeth erupt.
In other cases, early treatment may be initiated to prevent more serious problems from developing. Early intervention frequently makes the completion of treatment at a later age easier and less time consuming. In some cases, early treatment achieves results that are unattainable once the face and jaws have finished growing.
